From Space to Experience
Architecture has long been understood as a spatial discipline.
It operates through the organization of volumes, the articulation of boundaries, and the definition of relationships between elements in space. Plans, sections, and elevations describe configurations that are measurable, geometric, and, to a large extent, objective. Within this framework, space is treated as the primary medium of architecture—a neutral field within which form is arranged and meaning is produced (Rowe & Koetter, 1978).
This understanding has proven both resilient and productive. It has enabled architecture to be communicated, analyzed, and constructed with precision. It has established a common language through which spatial relationships can be described and evaluated.
Yet it also introduces a limitation.
To conceive architecture primarily as the organization of space is to privilege what can be represented over what is experienced. It assumes that spatial configuration is sufficient to account for architectural meaning—that geometry, once defined, inherently produces experience.
This assumption, however, is increasingly difficult to sustain.
Architecture is not only seen—it is lived. It is occupied, traversed, and enacted. It functions as the medium within which human activity unfolds: dwelling, working, interacting, desiring. Space, in this sense, is not an end, but a carrier.
And yet, despite this, architecture rarely operates with experience as its explicit framework. What might be described in other disciplines as “user experience” remains largely implicit—embedded within intuition, precedent, and authorship, rather than articulated as a systematic field of inquiry.
This raises a fundamental question.
If architecture has always been experienced, but not explicitly designed as experience—what, then, has it been designing?
What Is Architectural Space?
To understand the limits of architecture as a spatial design discipline, it is necessary to examine more closely what is meant by architectural space.
Within architectural discourse, space has not been defined through a single theoretical framework, but through a series of overlapping and, at times, competing interpretations. These interpretations differ in their origins—philosophical, social, phenomenological—but they converge in a crucial way: they position space as the primary object of architectural thought.
Abstract Space: Geometry and Objectivity
One of the most persistent conceptions of space emerges from the rationalist tradition, most clearly articulated by René Descartes. In this framework, space is understood as extension—res extensa—an abstract, continuous field defined by measurable dimensions (Descartes, 1644).
Space, in this sense, exists independently of the subject. It can be divided, quantified, and represented with precision. Its properties are stable and universal. Whether occupied or empty, space remains conceptually identical—it is a neutral container within which objects are placed and relations are established.
This conception has profoundly shaped architectural practice.
Drawings—plans, sections, elevations—operate precisely because space can be abstracted into geometry. Design becomes the manipulation of measurable relationships. Proportion, alignment, and hierarchy are defined through spatial coordinates. Architecture, within this framework, is the ordering of extension.
The strength of this model lies in its clarity.
It enables precision, communication, and construction. It provides a common language through which architecture can be conceived and executed. Yet this clarity comes at a cost.
By treating space as objective and self-sufficient, it detaches architecture from the conditions of its perception. It assumes that spatial configuration, once defined, inherently produces meaning—that geometry carries experience.
Produced Space: Social Construction
A different perspective emerges in the work of Henri Lefebvre, who challenges the notion of space as neutral container. In The Production of Space (1974), Lefebvre argues that space is not given—it is produced.
Space, in this view, is the result of social, political, and economic processes. It is shaped by forces of power, representation, and use. It is not merely designed—it is constructed through practices, ideologies, and systems of control.
Lefebvre distinguishes between different modes of space—conceived, perceived, and lived—each corresponding to different dimensions of social reality. Conceived space refers to representations—plans, maps, designs. Perceived space relates to spatial practices—how space is used and navigated. Lived space involves symbolic and experiential dimensions—how space is inhabited and given meaning.
This framework expands the understanding of space beyond geometry.
It introduces temporality, conflict, and multiplicity. Space is no longer stable—it is dynamic, contested, and continuously redefined.
Yet, despite this expansion, space remains the central object.
It is no longer neutral, but it is still something that can be produced, structured, and analyzed. Architecture, within this framework, continues to operate through the formation of spatial conditions—even if those conditions are understood as socially embedded rather than geometrically abstract.
Existential Space: Meaning and Orientation
A further shift occurs in the phenomenological tradition, particularly in the work of Christian Norberg-Schulz and, more fundamentally, Martin Heidegger.
Here, space is not conceived as an abstract field or a social construct, but as an existential condition. It is not something that exists independently of human presence—it is something that is revealed through dwelling.
For Heidegger (1971), to dwell is not simply to occupy space, but to exist meaningfully within a world. Space is not prior to human existence—it is constituted through it. Norberg-Schulz extends this idea within architectural theory, describing space as place—as a structured totality that provides orientation, identity, and belonging (Norberg-Schulz, 1980).
This approach introduces qualities that cannot be reduced to geometry or social production: atmosphere, character, meaning.
Space becomes something that is experienced as coherent, not merely defined.
Yet again, space remains central.
Even as it becomes existential, symbolic, and meaningful, it is still treated as the primary medium through which architecture operates. Architecture is understood as the creation of places—spaces endowed with identity and significance.
Perceptual Space: The Embodied Experience
A final perspective emerges through phenomenology and sensory-based theories of architecture, particularly in the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Juhani Pallasmaa.
Here, space is understood as fundamentally embodied.
It is not perceived from a distance, but experienced through movement, sensation, and presence. Vision is only one modality among many. Touch, sound, and proprioception contribute to spatial understanding. The body does not observe space—it inhabits it.
Architecture, from this perspective, is not simply seen—it is felt.
Pallasmaa (2012) emphasizes that architecture engages the full sensory apparatus. Materials, textures, acoustics, and light all contribute to how space is experienced. Merleau-Ponty (1962) further suggests that perception is not a passive reception of stimuli, but an active engagement with the world.
Space, therefore, is not fixed—it is continuously constituted through perception.
Yet even here, space remains the point of reference.
It is enriched, deepened, and made experiential, but it is still the entity through which architecture is understood. Experience is described as occurring within space, rather than as something that might redefine what architecture fundamentally produces.
A Converging Assumption
Across these different theoretical frameworks—abstract, produced, existential, and perceptual—a pattern emerges. Space shifts in meaning, moving from a purely geometric construct to a socially produced condition, then to an existential framework of meaning, and finally to an embodied field of perception. Each of these perspectives expands the understanding of space, adding layers of complexity and depth.
Yet despite these differences, none of them displace space from its central role.
In all cases, architecture is understood as operating through space. Whether designing, producing, interpreting, or experiencing, space remains the primary medium through which architecture is conceived and evaluated.
This convergence is significant.
It suggests that the discipline of architecture, despite its theoretical diversity, has remained fundamentally anchored in a single assumption:
that space is what architecture designs.
The Limits of Space
This assumption, however, introduces a critical limitation.
To treat space as the primary object of design is to assume that experience follows from it—that once space is defined, experience will emerge.
Yet this relationship is not guaranteed.
Two spaces may be geometrically identical and produce entirely different experiences. A space may be socially constructed and yet fail to engage. A place may be meaningful in theory and remain inert in practice.
Space, in other words, does not fully account for experience.
It provides conditions, but not outcomes.
This gap is not accidental. It is structural.
All the theories discussed define what space is.None fully address how experience is produced as a design objective.
Toward a Missing Framework
What emerges, then, is not the need for another definition of space, but the recognition of a missing layer.
Architecture has developed sophisticated tools for measuring space, producing space, interpreting space, and describing how space is experienced. It has constructed an extensive theoretical and practical apparatus around space as its central medium.
But it has not, in a systematic way, developed a framework for designing experience itself.
Experience remains implicit.
It is assumed to arise from spatial configuration, but it is rarely treated as a primary object of design. It operates through intuition, precedent, and authorship, rather than through explicit conceptualization.
This absence is not a failure.It is a threshold.
It marks the limit of architecture as a spatial discipline—and the point at which another framework begins to emerge.
If architecture is no longer defined solely by space, but by what occurs through it—if experience is not a byproduct, but a condition to be constructed—
then the question is no longer:
What is space?
But:
What is it that architecture actually produces?
The Limits of Space
The preceding analysis has established that architectural space, despite its multiple theoretical interpretations, has consistently functioned as the primary object of architectural thought. Whether understood as geometric extension, social production, existential condition, or embodied perception, space remains the medium through which architecture is conceived and articulated.
Yet this assumption is not universal.
It is historically and materially grounded.
It emerges from the conditions of physical construction—from gravity, material resistance, and the necessity of structural resolution. It presupposes a world in which space is stabilized by forces, bounded by matter, and organized through the logic of assembly.
What, then, occurs when these conditions are no longer operative?
Within digital environments—most notably those grouped under the term “metaverse”—the foundational premises that have historically defined architectural space begin to dissolve. Gravity is no longer a binding force but a parameter that can be activated, modified, or removed. Material resistance is simulated rather than encountered. Construction is not an act of assembly, but of generation.
The ground, as a primary datum, loses its necessity. Orientation becomes optional. Verticality and horizontality no longer derive from physical inevitability, but from design choice.
Under these conditions, space—as historically defined—does not disappear, but it loses its disciplinary coherence.
It can still be represented, but it no longer organizes.
It can still be described, but it no longer constrains.
The architectural concept of space, developed in relation to the physical world, ceases to function as a reliable framework for design.
At the same time, a second assumption becomes visible—one that has remained largely implicit within architectural practice.
Architecture has long operated under the premise that the design of space entails the design of experience.
This equivalence is rarely stated, yet it structures the discipline at a fundamental level. Spatial configuration is understood to produce experiential outcome. Proportion, sequence, enclosure, and hierarchy are not only formal operations, but instruments through which atmosphere, meaning, and use are expected to emerge.
Space, in this sense, is not only what architecture designs—it is how architecture assumes experience will occur.
This equivalence, however, does not hold.
The relationship between space and experience is neither direct nor stable. A given spatial configuration does not produce a singular or predictable experiential result. Identical geometries may be perceived differently depending on context, subject, or sequence. A space designed with a specific intention may generate responses that diverge significantly from that intention.
This is not an exception—it is a structural condition.
To illustrate this, one may consider a spatial configuration defined by a linear sequence—a corridor of fixed proportion, consistent material treatment, and controlled lighting conditions. From a spatial standpoint, the configuration remains constant. Its dimensions, surfaces, and geometry are stable and reproducible.
Yet the experience of this configuration is not singular.
Traversed at speed, the corridor may be perceived as transitional—an interval between destinations. Traversed slowly, it may acquire a sense of duration and anticipation. Occupied in isolation, it may produce introspection; occupied collectively, it may become a site of interaction. The same spatial conditions, maintained without alteration, give rise to distinct experiential states.
The divergence does not originate in the space itself, but in the conditions through which it is encountered.
Space defines a set of parameters.Experience unfolds through them—but is not determined by them.
This discrepancy points to a deeper misalignment.
Space, as defined within architectural theory, operates primarily as a static construct. It can be measured, represented, and fixed. Its properties are stable across time. Experience, by contrast, is inherently temporal. It unfolds through movement, sequence, and duration. It is shaped by anticipation, memory, and change.
The two operate according to different logics.
To design space is to define a configuration.To produce experience is to structure a sequence.
The assumption that one directly generates the other obscures this difference.
Within the physical world, this misalignment is partially mediated by constraint.
Gravity stabilizes orientation. Material resistance limits form. Programmatic necessity organizes use. These conditions introduce a degree of consistency between spatial configuration and experiential outcome. They do not eliminate variability, but they reduce its range.
In this sense, physical constraints do not only limit architecture—they stabilize it.
They provide a framework within which spatial decisions carry relatively predictable consequences.
Within the metaverse, this stabilizing framework is no longer present.
When gravity becomes optional, orientation loses its necessity. When materials no longer resist, form loses its limits. When construction is no longer sequential, assembly loses its logic. The conditions that once anchored space are no longer operative.
Under these circumstances, the gap between space and experience becomes fully exposed.
Without constraint, spatial configuration does not converge toward a stable experiential field. It becomes increasingly indeterminate. The same environment can be navigated in multiple ways, perceived from multiple orientations, and interpreted without a fixed reference.
Space no longer guides experience—it coexists with it.
This shift does not introduce a new problem.It reveals an existing one.
The metaverse does not invalidate architecture—it isolates one of its underlying assumptions and renders it visible. By removing the physical conditions that once mediated the relationship between space and experience, it exposes the fact that this relationship was never guaranteed.
What was previously stabilized by constraint is now left unresolved.
Under these conditions, a displacement occurs.
If space no longer determines experience, then the primary object of architectural design can no longer be space alone.
What emerges instead is the condition that was always present, but never fully articulated:
the experience of the subject.
Not as a secondary effect, but as a primary phenomenon.
Not as something that follows design, but as something that must be constructed through it.
This does not imply that space becomes irrelevant.
It implies that space is insufficient.
It can no longer serve as the sole medium through which architecture operates. It must be understood as one component within a broader system—one that includes movement, perception, sequence, and interaction.
What architecture produces is no longer adequately described as spatial configuration.
It is better understood as the structuring of experience over time.
If this is the case, then the question is no longer whether architecture can operate without space as its primary object.
It is whether architecture can redefine its disciplinary foundation in relation to experience itself.
And who, if not the architect, is better positioned to undertake this shift—to move from the design of space to the construction of experience?
And if experience is not what architecture produces incidentally, but what it must construct deliberately—
what would it take to design it?
What Is Experience?
If architecture can no longer be understood solely as the design of space, but must instead be reconsidered in relation to experience, then a fundamental question emerges:
what is experience?
The term is widely used across disciplines—philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, design—yet it resists a singular definition. It refers at once to sensation, perception, action, memory, and interpretation. It is immediate, yet extended in time. It is subjective, yet structured. It is both what is felt and what is understood.
Within architecture, experience has always been present, but rarely defined.
It is invoked to describe atmosphere, movement, and perception. It is referenced in relation to qualities such as light, material, scale, and sequence. Yet it remains conceptually diffuse—something that accompanies architecture, rather than something that architecture explicitly constructs.
If experience is to become central, it must first be clarified.
More precisely, it must be reframed as architectural experience: not experience in general, but the specific condition that emerges through the interaction between a subject and a constructed environment.
Experience as Sensation: The Immediate Field
One of the earliest systematic approaches to experience emerges in the work of William James, who describes experience as a continuous “stream of consciousness” (James, 1890). In this view, experience is not composed of discrete elements, but unfolds as an ongoing flow of sensations, impressions, and thoughts.
There is no clear boundary between perception and cognition. Experience is not something that happens in isolated moments, but something that persists—constantly shifting, never fully static.
This perspective introduces a key characteristic:
experience is continuous.
It cannot be reduced to a single spatial condition or moment of perception. It exists across time, accumulating, dissolving, and reforming.
For architecture, this suggests that experience cannot be located in form alone. A wall, a volume, or a surface does not produce experience as a fixed entity. It participates in a larger field of sensations that extend beyond it.
Experience as Perception: The Embodied Condition
A second approach, developed through phenomenology, reframes experience as fundamentally embodied. In the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, perception is not understood as passive reception, but as active engagement (Merleau-Ponty, 1962).
The subject does not observe the world from a distance, but exists within it. Experience emerges through the interaction between body and environment—through movement, orientation, and sensory immersion.
Architecture, from this perspective, is not simply seen—it is inhabited.
Space is not an abstract container, but a field of relations that unfolds through bodily presence. Scale is felt, not measured. Distance is perceived through effort. Orientation is constructed through movement.
This introduces a second characteristic:
experience is relational.
It does not exist independently of the subject, nor independently of the environment. It emerges through their interaction.
Experience as Interaction: Systems and Response
A more recent perspective, emerging from cognitive science and design theory, shifts the focus toward interaction. In the work of Donald Norman, experience is understood as the result of engagement between user and system (Norman, 2013).
Here, experience is not only sensory or perceptual—it is operational.
Actions produce responses. Systems provide feedback. Affordances suggest possible behaviors. Experience unfolds through a loop of action and reaction.
Although developed in relation to product and interface design, this framework introduces an important insight for architecture:
experience is not only what is perceived—it is what is enacted.
A door is not only seen—it is opened. A stair is not only perceived—it is climbed. An environment is not only encountered—it is navigated.
This introduces a third characteristic:
experience is interactive.
It is structured through engagement, not only through observation.
Experience as Sequence: Time and Structure
Beyond sensation, perception, and interaction, experience can also be understood as sequence.
It unfolds over time.
Each moment is not isolated, but connected to what precedes and what follows. Anticipation, transition, and memory become integral components. What is experienced at any given moment is shaped not only by present conditions, but by prior events and expected outcomes.
This temporal dimension has been explored in philosophy, including in the work of Gilles Deleuze, where experience is understood as difference unfolding through time (Deleuze, 1994), as well as in disciplines such as cinema and narrative theory.
In this context, experience is not defined by static conditions, but by progression.
For architecture, this suggests a shift in emphasis:
from configuration to unfolding.
A space is not only what it is at a given moment, but how it is approached, entered, traversed, and exited. Meaning is not located in form alone, but in sequence.
This introduces a fourth characteristic:
experience is temporal.
It is structured through time, not only through space.
A Converging Condition
Across these perspectives—sensory, perceptual, interactive, and temporal—a coherent understanding begins to emerge.
Experience is not a fixed entity. It is not stable, nor is it singular. It is continuous, relational, interactive, and temporal. It unfolds through engagement and is shaped by context, movement, and interpretation.
Most importantly, experience is not something that exists independently of the subject, nor independently of the environment. It is produced through their interaction.
This has a critical implication.
Experience cannot be fully contained within space.
It cannot be reduced to geometry, nor to form. It exceeds spatial definition, even as it unfolds through spatial conditions.
The Architectural Gap
Despite this, architecture has not historically treated experience as its primary object of design.
It has described experience, referenced it, and attempted to evoke it. It has developed sensitivities toward atmosphere, materiality, and perception. Yet it has not formalized experience as a structured field of design.
Instead, it has relied on space as a proxy.
By designing spatial configurations, architecture has assumed that experience would follow. Yet, as previously established, this relationship is neither direct nor guaranteed.
Experience remains, to a large extent, implicit.
It is shaped through intuition, precedent, and authorship, rather than through explicit conceptual frameworks.
This is not due to a lack of interest, but to a lack of tools.
Architecture has developed precise methods for representing space.It has not developed equivalent methods for structuring experience.
Toward an Architectural Definition
If experience is to become central to architecture, it must be understood not as a byproduct, but as a construct.
Architectural experience can be described as the structured unfolding of perception, action, and interpretation through an environment over time.
It is not located in objects, nor in space alone, but in the relationships that emerge through movement, sequence, and interaction.
In this sense, architecture does not merely define where things are.
It defines how they are encountered.
This shift is subtle, but fundamental.
From the arrangement of elements to the orchestration of events.From spatial configuration to experiential structure.
If experience can be understood as structured, relational, and temporal—if it can be described, analyzed, and decomposed—
then it may also be possible to design it.
Not indirectly, through space alone, but directly, as a primary object of architectural thought.
This possibility has already been explored, albeit in a different domain.
Within contemporary design disciplines, particularly those concerned with digital environments, experience has been approached through systematic frameworks—often described under the term “user experience” (Norman, 2013).
These frameworks do not replace architecture.They suggest a different way of structuring its intentions.
If such approaches can articulate how experience unfolds, how it is guided, and how it is shaped—
what would it mean to integrate them into architecture itself?
