THIS IS MARS
MARS (Metaverse Architecture Research platform) was conceived as an attempt to interrogate architecture through the conditions introduced by emerging digital environments.
Its point of departure is the assumption that the metaverse does not constitute merely a technological development, but rather a distinct spatial paradigm — one within which architecture can be re-examined at a fundamental level.
Within such environments, the conventional constraints that have historically shaped architecture — materiality, gravity, construction logic — are no longer operative in the same way. As a result, architecture shifts from an act of building to an act of composition. Space is no longer primarily structural, but experiential, defined through perception, sequence, and narrative continuity.
MARS operates as an ongoing research framework. It brings together a series of texts and explorations that move across architecture, narrative structures, and spatial experience, without presupposing fixed disciplinary boundaries. The intention is not to establish a new doctrine, but to critically engage with the evolving conditions under which architecture is conceived and perceived.
While the metaverse constitutes the initial field of inquiry, the questions that arise extend beyond it. Issues of presence, immersion, authorship, and perception begin to reposition architecture itself — not only within digital environments, but also in relation to physical space.
MARS does not aim to resolve these questions.
It seeks to articulate them with greater precision.
MARS was founded by Yiorgos Papazoglou, architect and co-founder of ATYP Architects, Athens/ GR.
His work is situated at the intersection of architectural design, technical resolution, and conceptual exploration. Having been engaged both in the development of built projects and in the processes that support their realization, his approach reflects a continuous negotiation between the tangible constraints of construction and the more abstract dimensions of spatial thinking.
Alongside this trajectory, a parallel line of interest has been developing over time — one that traces back to early experiences of digital environments. As a child, long before architecture was understood as a discipline, there was a persistent inclination toward imagining and constructing spaces within video games: environments, atmospheres, and sequences that were not built, but conceived.
This early, almost instinctive spatial impulse can be understood as a precursor to later architectural inquiry — one that now re-emerges within the context of the metaverse.
MARS is not positioned as a departure from practice, but as its extension.
It provides a space in which architecture can be examined without the immediate pressures of realization, allowing for a more direct engagement with its underlying principles.
